As a German I honestly like this scenario, although I am saddened by Prussia/Königsberg never existing in this world, what we have gained in the west, most notably controlling all of German speaking Switzerland, Elsass Lothringen, and the lowlands, makes up for what we didn’t have in the east in this timeline

I sincerely believe that if the Roman Empire survived in the east, it wouldn't go back to being a republic. I could see it becoming a constitutional monarchy at best, but one where the sovereign has actual political power. Not like the British monarchy.

Now this is an alternative timeline I would really like. And it’s not very far fetched at all. Everyone would benefit from this, same would probably be true if we united now for the next hundred years. I don’t however agree with the likelihood of some stuff here. With Finland in the union, they would have reached us the importance of defense from their time with Russia. The entire region including Denmark would have been much more prepared to battle the nazis. I don’t think Denmark would have given up in a day as in our timeline. Norwegians held up for months, Finn’s didn’t capulate against Soviet. I think we could manage surprisingly well. They knew no more iron for nazi after that, selling to England instead. Perhaps so good that the Cold War would have a third neutral superpower block. Such a timeline would be really interesting in our time.

I'd assume that Rome would collapse via the 1200's due to a growing east and mass migrations westward, Germania would fall into disarray and a new emperor on the throne that can't manage the situation would lose the English and Germanic regions, while sensing weakness the Arab states would move west into Morocco and with the empire falling apart I could even see Slavs in Italy revolting, Leaving a rough Gaul border with a bit of Spain most likely being lost to Arabics like in real life. With politics being focused more and more on Paris I could see Milan slowly becoming a cultural capital if held. This is based off a migration and one single bad emperor, not to mention revolts against bad leadership, I'd say a more Latin French state would be birthed as England: their main rival, Pesters them with the Germans, The next 400 years of history would probably go off to make a normalish timeline but yeah.

I wrote such an alternate history from the mid 1990s onwards till the recent years. I wanted to find out how a Roman Empire with partially still an ancient mind set would react to a modern world, with the modern crisis like WW-I, WW-II, Muslim terrorism, antisemitism climate change, environmentalism and other modern issues. My world building files has a combined number of more than 750 DIN A4 pages Calibri 10 Pt. A very brief historical overview. My POD was 476 CE when Silvanus Torquatus Maximianus became the successor to Romulus thus deposing Odoacar a month after Odoacar got rid of Romulus Augustulus. The empire had its new glorius but also some very critical moments, declines, re-rises. In WW-I it tried to be neutral but got drawn into the war on the side of the Entente. In WW-II it originally fought alongside Germany but switched sides in 1942 CE. During the 1960s it had the last civil war so far. Since 1981 Octavius Secundus rules as the emperor. Present era: In the aftermath of the 9/11 Al-Quaeda terrorist attack, Rome took revenge on the Arabic world by conquering Iraq. A bit later, North corea had been conquered because Kim Yong Ill dodn't abandon the nuclear arms programm Empoeror Octavius Secundus forbade that country. During Octavius Secundus reign a new series of Roman-Muslim conflicts arose with the rsult in strict laws regulating the lifes of Imperial Muslims. The Roman Empire thanks to its improved organization during some Octavian reforms was able to manage the Corona pancemids very well with one of the lowest death rates in the world. In 2021 he declared that he will retire on October 2036. During the Ukraine war, Rome supported the Ukraine with enough material so that the Ukraine could repell the Russians by the early 2024. In the aftermath of Oct. 7 2023, the Hamas attack, Octavius Secundus firmly stood at the side of Israel a politics highly supported by his fellow Romans. The city of Rome: Rome has about 24 million inhabitants. The old ancient buildings are still fully intact, you still can have baths at the ancient great baths, can watch classical chariot race but also modern football games in modern stadiums. Rome also has newer grand scale attractions like the Peters-Dome, the Spanish scale, the Lateran Basilica, the Expositio Universalis Romae Rione. The Romans of my timeline built their high rise buildings farther away from the downtown of Rome out of respect for their own ancient buildings. Due to the softer underground, high rise buidings and smaller skyscrapers never gets much taller than 150 to 250 meters. There are a few exceptions like the Turrris Victoris Romanis with a height of 2001 feet and the Turris Severi Centralis in the EUR Rione. The subway isn't that good due to all the ancient relics they find while creating new subway tunnels. And at every historical attraction like the perfectly presserved Forum Traiani there are the typical green small food trucks for the tourists which sells Bibiti, Gelati, Snacks. And some bus drivers desperately try to force their way through the masses of tourists next to so many attractions, are honking like there's no tomorrow. And at the old notorious Tarpejan rock you'll see climbers illegally climbing that rock, followed by their fans and such videos can be seen at TikTok, EgoVideoSum, Instagram and MeoVideo2000. Other cities and points of interrest: Leptis Magna is the imperial capital of the movie makers, called the Hollywood of the Empire, a city which is famed for its liberal politics and the Litus Libertas, the most liberal beach at a city of the Empire. Hocong is a great trading hub. Colonia Maioriana Felix is the capital of the province of Florida. The Canno Magno in the north of the Roman province of Arizona is a great sight. The military: The legions of course wear modern uniforms, not futuristic Lorica Segmentata armors. Cammouflage pants and shirts are the modern fashion. Overall, the design of the real world Italian military loos much like how I imagine the Roman military. But it has nuclear powered aircraft carriers, stealth-bombers, modern machine guns, atomic weapons. It'S structure has some ancient parts like the eastern Roman style Themata militare, modernized as global command regions like those the USA has globally. The Lorica Segmentata armor is relegated to ceremonial affairs but during history they also wore the Lorica Squamata and Lorica Hamata and a kind of Spanish renaissance style like armor during the great intercontinental spread of the empire in the 16th century CE. The state: It covers more than nine million square kilometers, has provinces like Florida, Arizona, those in the Mediterranean plus the recently conquered ones like MEsopotamia, formerly known as Iraq, parts of Iran, North Korea. It has more than 725 million inhabitants and it is divided into 93 provinces. The emperor is head of the state. Some were corrupt to the bones, insane like Mericius Unus who wanted to finish what Hitler startet but he got stopped by the counter emperor Maxentius IV during the 1960s civil war. But they also have good emperors. The population (Romans): The Romans have four languages which they consider their mother tongues, Italian (Spoken permanently by around 84 % of the Romans, modern Hellenic spoken by around 16 % of the Romans the old Latin and ancient Hellenic are used in highly traditional ceremonies, at the imperial court, partially still in the military but Italian and modern Hellenic are the normal languages. The Romans are divided into two brotherly nationalities which considers mutually and on an equal level Romans namely the Italian western Romans and the Hellenic eastern Romans. So, a "Valerius Andreotti Theofilis" can be a Roman like "Gaius Ovidius", Francesco Vittorio Gracchi", "Stefano Maggidis". Recently the older Cultus Deorum became a bit more widespread than the Catholic Christianity. The Romans are still divided into the Plebeians, the Equestrians and the higher up nobility but there are no visible slaves anymore since it got abolished by Imperator Caesar Petronius Maximus Secundus in the 1840s CE as no longer part of the modern Romaness. But in forced labor camps for those who got punished for such camps slavery still is a thing but a bit hidden fro the public presence. Romans eats Pizza, PAsta, Picata, and the whole of the rich mediterranean cuisine but also fast food like that of MC-Donalds which even has a francise presence in the old Campus Martius Antica in the Thermae Neronis. The Romans wear modern fashion like a suite from Armani for work or jeans, basecaps, sneakers and t-shirts in their regular life. A re-import from the USA are Tiga-parties where young Roman wear makeshift improvised Togas on such motto-parties. Overall they follow the ideal of the Bella Figura, to look good. Sport: The Romans love traditional chariot race, modern Formula one car races, the Gladiatorial battles which after a long tome prohibited during the dominance era of Christianity made a comeback, european football with the notorious Roman football Tifosi. Gladiatorial battles are not deadly anymore but follows the old rules and the Amphitheatrum Flavium had been carefully modernized to not to change the ancient look and outside of sports events public presentations, concerts, the Vivaldi musical shows in the Circus Maximus are great to watch and other media shows are held in those ancient and modern stadiums. The most prestigious bodybuilding contests are held in the Theatrum Balbi and the Theatrum Marcelli. Bodybuilding startet as a show program before the gladiatorial battles. Technology: At home they have smartphones like that from Severus Electronica Corporatus, the Roman version of Apple inc, volumetric displays (a.k.a. "Holograms" are in its early prototype state and only there in research facilities on a minor scale. They of course uses the internet but since there also is the English language English became a foreign language Romans like to use when they want to sound cool. In their social media accounts they greet each other with a "Bon Giorno maestro" or a simple "Hi dude" and "Chiao". The Roman space programm has managed to construct three space stations in Earth's orbit, PAX-ROMANA, the oldest, PARADISO DELLE STELLE, a hotel space station and ARES-UNUS, a military science station. They also have a larger moon base for up to 50 people and on April 2024 the Romans used a fitting launch window to finally start the colonization of Mars large scale. On June 2024 the first large manned MArs rocket still is on its way and will land on September 2024. Well, so much for a teeny tiny insight into my own approach on the many alternate history Romes. "Buona sera amico della storia Romana e questo video è stato molto bello" As the modern Roman of my alternate history would say. For all those writers, better don't use AI language assistand tools I never let those tools write my stories,

The problem with scenarios like this is that the further away you go from the initial change the more difficult it is to predict anything. Just one example: in this world, by the late 19th century the world would be so incredibly different, someone like lenin might never have been born, and the communist revolution might never happen. Or living conditions and inequality in any other big colonial empire like Austria, brittain, Lotharingia or france might get so bad that a communist like revolution happens there instead and not in russia, and so on. Or who knows, the industrial revolution might happen earlier because of more competition and war, or might not even happen at all. One change in the 12th century would mean the world and the people born in it would have already been totally different 100 years later, let alone 700 years later. You and i would simply not exist, let alone other major figures like lenin or Napoleon, or major events like the communist revolution. The revolutions in the americas might never have happened either, the usa wouldn't exist, africa and the middle East might look entirely different, etc etc. 12:30 My point exactly: the idea that the united states would exist in this scenario is kind of silly, as N-america's history would also be completely different. Just a few examples: a more powerfull and even more wealthy lothharingian Netherlands would mean more competition for Brittain, France and Spain during the initial colonisation of the americas AND the subsequent wars between and expansion of these colonies. A large part of the 13 colonies was originally Dutch and in this scenario the Lotharingians would be able to carve out an even bigger part of N-america, probably the entire N-E (new york, maine, Nova Scotia, etc). Wars in europe and america would probably mean the British colonies remain much smaller, never reach dominance in N-america and thus never become independent. Or they might become independent but might have to share N-america with a large Lotharingian, French and Spanish colony. However it goes, it is EXTREMELY unlikely the USA would even exist, let alone in its current huge continent spanning form. Don't forget that up until the late 19th century the USA barely extended beyond the mid-west, and most of the mid-west was only annexed after buying it from France after they lost another war. And the entire western USA was only added well into the 1800s. With a much larger, wealthier and powerfull Lotharingian Dutch colony in N-america, it's pretty evident N-america too would look very very different by the 20th century. The usa would most likely simply not exist.
